Top Tamil Movies 2009 - The Good, Bad and Ugly

This year is coming to a close. There are some really good movies I have seen in this year. Tamil movies, English movies and Hindi movies. Following is the list of movies I thought best described the good, bad and ugly among the entire movies released in 2009.

Sujatha Awards

Tamil writer Sujatha used to give away funny awards every year in his Katrathum Petrathum column in Ananda Vikatan. It used to be a good account of funny things happened all over that year. Ever since his demise, I always imagined what Sujatha would have awarded for every year. By no means what follows is not what Sujatha would have awarded, but the list of movie awards I would imagine to be awarded for year 2009.

Runaway Success	Naadodigal A movie about friendship and love. Released in the middle of year, it turned out to be a trend setter. An literal running scene in the movie became sensational for Sankar Mahadevan’s singing.
Silent Success	Vennila Kabadi Kulu A movie a small time village kabadi team want to win matches and prove a point or two. Has a sad ending and know for it.
Surprise Success	Pasanga Movie about kids. A good song by Dr. Balamuralikrishna is among the notables. Successful production by Sasikumar.
Copycat Success	Unnaipol Orruvan Dubbed from Hindi movie Wednesday. It went on to became a successful movie. Longtime movie for Kamalhasan.
Copycat Failure	Kanden Kadallai Copied from Hindi movie Jab we met. Apart from Santhanam’s comedy nothing is worth mentioning.
Longtime Success	Naan Kadavul For Dialogues, for Bala and for Illaiyaraja’s music.
Longtime Failure	Kandasamy Produced to close to two years, the movie opened up big and fell flat afterwards. Perhaps Vikram should decide on the story he act.
Built-up Failure	Thoranai Had a big built up, but din’t do well in box offices.
Horror Movies	Yavarum Nallam, Eeram Eeram had a nice way of movie narration.
WTF?	Villu No comments.
Whose movie is it?	Aadhavan Is it Suriya’s movie or Vadivelu’s movie?
Did it release?	Newtonin Mondram Vethi, Sarvam.
Special Mention:	Modhi Villaiyadu For Vinay’s Tamil dialogues.
My Favorite Songs	Pitchai patharam (Naan Kadavul) Kana kankiren (Anadha Thandavam)

A. R. Rahman won Oscar award amid lot of speculations for Slumdog Milionaire.

Of course, I haven’t added Vettaikaran to this list. As I finish this list the movie is not yet released. But undoubtedly the most ridiculed movie in this year.

I have no comments for this. We need to wait and see how this movie fares in box office.
